What colors can redheads wear?

Ok, I’ve always respected you gals and your opinions in fashion emergencies, so I thought I’d drop you a line. I have fair skin and I’ve been a blonde ever since high school, so my fallback valentine’s day outfit has always been bombshell-red. This year, however, I’ve started dying my hair red (strawberry blonde) and I’m still figuring out what colors I can and can’t wear. What on earth can I wear for my valentine’s day date that will still knock my hubby’s socks off, without making me look like Belle Watling from Gone With the Wind??

Any other general redhead advice will be much appreciated as well :)

Thanks for your awesome blog, and your commitment to modesty!

Hi Allisan!

I think you are asking a great question. Although I don’t have all the answers… I did a little hollywood look up. Here are a few of the beautiful redheads in Hollywood, and look at all these pretty colors they are wearing! Red. Purple, Blue, Pink. And they all look amazing! I think the main trick, is just to pick something out and wear it with confidence. But I will say, I think purple would be my top pick! (Yes, I do realize that the blue dress isn’t modest, however I wanted to show you that color with her hair, I also tried finding pictures of Julianne Moore, because we all know she is a very beautiful redhead, but I found that she wears a lot of neutrals… )

Readers, do you have any redhead advice? Please share!!!

Peace. Natalie

being a redhead all my life I try to stay away from yellow, orange, and red. but other colors usually look great….green is good (any shade) and also any shade of blue or purple. Pinks can be sketchy depending on the shade.

I am a natural red head and I find I get the most compliments when I am wearing bright jewel tone colors. If you feel comfortable in the color then you will rock it.

I’m a mom of two red heads, I love them in green, purple, turquoise, and blue (think spring colors) but I think adult red heads look especially good in black! I agree that if you’re wearing it in confidence you can pull anything off!

Hi! As a natural strawberry blonde, I thought I’d chime in (enjoying the blog, by the way – new reader here!). Jewel tones always look good, but don’t shy away from red – I get plenty of compliments when I wear red! You just need to be selective about the shade – orangey tomato reds don’t look as good on us as deeper scarlets and true reds, which look fantastic (especially if you are as pale as a natural redhead). I’d say orange and yellow are the trickiest colors for redheads, but if you look for the right shade (and wear the right makeup colors), even those can be done. If you like neutrals, gray also looks beautiful – makes the red hair really stand out!

I became a dark red head/brunette about two weeks ago and suddenly have had to be way more careful about what I’m wearing!! I wanted to wear a pink dress with tights yesterday but decided it may be overkill. I second the experimenting — looking at yourself in a full-length mirror.

Also – if you want to wear pink — wear a green cardigan with it, so the red is broken up a little

A great reference is the red carpet. I have seen Julianne Moore in fantastic emerald green before. Nicole Kidman is also a great reference (from her strawberry blond days).

My recommendations, as mentioned above, are jewel tones, the greens, purples and blues. However, avoid pastel colors or shades. They tend to wash the person out.

I also like how a rich brown looks against red hair. And you can’t go wrong with black.

    Hi,
My daughter is strawberry champagne like blonde and I love to put her in lilac or lavendar purple. Every time I do, I say that it is so her color! It is the same as Julia Roberts in My Bestfriend’s Wedding, the maid of honor dress she wore.

I like the purple, I think it would be perfect for Valentine’s day!

Two of my four sisters are redheads and I can honestly say that they look AMAZING in any color. They are show-stoppingly beautiful and glamorous…in part because of their gorgeous, shiny hair. :)

Green is stunning. My husband would die for me to wear green everyday. Any shade.

Marcia Cross is gorgeous. And so is Debra Messing. I love Marcia in emerald green with red lipstick.

I’m a natural redhead and without fail, jewel tones always look fabulous with any shade of red hair. My redhead friends with warm coloring can get away with colors that would clash on me though (I have blue eyes and my coloring tends to be more agreeable with some cool colors of blues and purples than ward reds…) It’s a lot like picking lipstick: anyone can wear red, as long as it’s the right hue.

Love these examples – I would wear any of those outfits!

My daughter is has VERY red and I LOVE that aqua/light turqouise blue, black, green, and my new favorite it the deep purple. Good luck! Redheads are so fun!

I am a natural redhead and my hair has changed colors over the years. I have avoided most red’s and oranges most of my life because of the color of my hair I don’t want it to look too orange and most reds do that too me. Unlike most redheads I have olive skin (it makes my sister’s mad because they both have darker hair and have the pale skin that just burns).

So watch the reds and oranges when you have red hair because sometimes it just doesn’t go. I do have some shades that will go great but I really have to be careful with those colors.

Greens, purples all those jewel tones look great on redheads! If you have fair skin don’t go too deep or too light on the color tones. Too deep will look harsh and too pale will make you look washed out.
