Skinny Jeans: To Wear or Not to Wear

So my brother in law, who dresses very nice and is quite trendy, told me the other day that, flared and boot cut jeans are out of style. (I wasn’t wearing jeans, we were just talking about clothes and he mentioned it) I know that skinny jeans are “in” right now, they are very cute, BUT i think that they only work for certain body types. I don’t think they look good on curvacious women. I’m a curvy woman! I wear a size 12/14 and I would NEVER wear skinny jeans. They would make my thighs look HUGE! Does this mean I’m “out of style” and if so what am I supposed to wear? What is your opinion on the skinny jean? Thanks so much! I LOVE this site!
I have been wondering the same thing! I have a ‘strong lower figure’ or a ‘pear’ body shape. I think skinny jeans look great on some people (like NATALIE for example!) but I’m not quite sure if I should give them a try or not!
So, I want to know what you guys think!

I have fairly large legs for my body and I bought a pair of Levi’s skinny jeans, finally, after trying on several. The ones that I found were actually pretty comfortable. I think you just have to find the right pair. They are harder to get fitted for, in my opinion, because of their tight fit. So keep shopping around. The main reason I wanted some was to wear with boots over top. Bootcut and even flare jeans are still in style, (or else they wouldn’t still be selling them) but skinny jeans are definitely the trend right now, and I think they are cute. A nice alternative, though, are straight legged jeans, which I saw on my sister-in-law (who is fashion queen) and are a style between boot and skinny. When I saw them on her, I almost thought they were skinny jeans for a second.
Clinton and Stacey from TLC’s What Not to Wear very rarely tell women to look for the skinny jeans and the few times I’ve seen them push the skinny, the women had the teeny, tiny bodies we associate with the skinny jeans. They mostly push straight and boot cut jeans. I think the skinnys work for some, but you’re definately not out of style for sticking with what looks good on YOUR body!
Not every fashion trend looks good on every body. For example, I have very long, thin limbs and a proportionally shorter torso. Those cute cropped jackets that everyone wears? Yeah, those make me look even MORE disproportionate. So even though they are oh so stylish (and look so darling on other people), I steer clear. The same goes with skinny jeans. If they don’t flatter you, you aren’t going to look stylish no matter how trendy they are.
I’m not a dainty flower… but I look pretty darn good in my skinny jeans! If you can find a pair that works (for me it’s a pair from Old Navy) then I think they can really elongate the legs (especially when worn with heels or wedges). I just look for ones that stay a little bit looser through the calf and ankle rather than the kind that are as tight as leggings. If you can’t find any that work, then you shouldn’t worry. A flattering pair of jeans is way more stylish then an unflattering pair of the “in” cut.
I think skinny jeans are cute on some people with the right body type. I don’t have skinny legs therefore I do not wear skinny jeans. Instead I do a closer fitted bootcut type jean. WAY more comfortable!! I wear jeans quite a bit, but if there not comfortable than I don’t care about fashion trends I’m just not going to wear them!!
People have told me that I have the perfect figure for the “skinny” jeans. I wanted to see what all of the hype was about, and to see if they flattered my body. I went to the Buckle and tried on quite a few. I felt ridiculous in them! I try to keep up with the trends, but I associate the skinny jeans with the Jonas Brothers, so therefore I have an even harder time bringing myself to buying a pair. I guess if you find the perfect pair that flatters your body, then go for it. Other then that, there are plenty of bootcut/flare jeans that are super cute and trendy. When I am at the Buckle, I still see the bootcut/flare jeans flying off of the shelves more then the skinny jeans are.
I disagree about boot and flare jeans being out of style. I think they can be totally modern and fashionable if you pick the right ones.
And, personally, I think skinny jeans are a horrible trend. They look good on only about 5% of the population. If you fall in that category, I say: “wear ‘em.” If not, I definitely say: “steer clear.”
I am totally with you and am in the same boat! I actually love the skinny jean trend…on my skinny girl friends. I have hips and a butt. I’ve tried the jeans on, several different brands and sizes and half the time I can’t even get the jeans up past my hips (even in my usual size). While, yes they are in, so are fitted boot-cut jeans or straight leg jeans, which work a bit better on a curvy body.
I think if we wear something we are comfortable in and feel good about – we will look much better than just trying to stuff ourselves into a trend for trend-sake. Confidence and Fit is the first part of looking good in anything.
I’ve heard that there are “different” cuts of skinny jeans to flatter every body type…but I don’t know if I believe it. I think it’s worth trying it on in the dressing room but if it doesn’t look good you’ll never wear, and that would be a waste of money that could be spent on something that you would wear. I heart my bootcuts.
I think skinny jeans look good with boots over top on a generally smaller sized women and that’s about it. If you aren’t skinny, it’s a problem, and if you are, it overemphasizes the skinniness and good proportion is lost. I’m with Christina…5 % truly have the correct proportion for them to be truly flattering. Correct proportion meaning not to big AND not to small. Sure, give it some time, and they start to grow on you…most trends work that way…but was it that way when you first saw them?
Give me back my boot cuts.
Give them a shot, you might be surprised how much you like them!

(be sure and try several different brands)
Ok, I was always way against Skinny’s – they just didn’t look good on me! But I found a pair that were awesome! Have you ever tried Not Your Daughter’s Jeans? Check out my review here:

I think there is a very small minority that skinny jeans look good on. The rest–it just shows off what people should be hiding and makes feet look HUGE.
I think it depends on how you wear them. For example – if you have larger thighs/hips, don’t wear them with a pair of stiletto heels – it will just emphasize how much bigger you are on top than
on the bottom. And i probably wouldn’t wear them with a shorter shirt – But, wearing them with a Tunic or long cardigan will be very flattering for any size. I was just reading an article online that was saying that even tho most people think you have to be really skinny to wear them, that they are actually one of the more flattering cuts for women of all sizes. Btw, Jennifer Hudson wears them – and she looks really cute.
II love skinny jeans, and I think they look great on everybody. They make all legs look longer. If you are curvy wearing flares will just make you look sloppy and wide. If you don’t like your bum, then cover it with a long sweater, but I say let it show. Curves are great. Men love my bigger behind. I get compliments all the time, and Im small at the waist, and bigger in the hips. I won’t wear bootcuts and flares because it makes me feel like a reject from some 90′s sit com.
How can skinny jeans make feet look huge? Thats silly. They simply follow the curve of your own leg. If you need extra fabric around ankles to make your feet look small, then you can’t ever wear a skirt or shorts.
usually if your bigger in shape, than obviously skinny jeans aren’t your thing, but you CAN try it if you want. ON some woman they look great. Other “in style” clothings are usually boyfriend jeans. AKA short pants type of jeans. Or simply tights with a skirt. That’s very “in” these days.
sometimes skinny jeans are not comfortable to wear, i would always prefer to use loos jeans -’.
I am a solid size 12, and I LOVE my skinny jeans. I have only found a few brands and styles that I can pull off, but they turned out worth the search. But, if they make you uncomfortable, don’t wear them! They are not the only way to be stylish!
