Help this reader!

I have been HORRIBLE at answering emails these last several months. I’m sorry!!! I got the email below a couple days ago and thought I would look to my readers for answers…

Dear Sensibly Styled,

I’ve been struggling with this, and I thought, who could help me better but the awesome people at Sensibly Styled? My problem is skinny jeans. I love them, and I want to buy them, but I have ginormous calves and “athletic thighs” with small hips and no waist at all. Every time I go out to buy skinny jeans I can’t find any that fit – I’ll try on a pair that fits my legs but is humongous around my hips, so then I go down a size and can’t get them over my calves. Have you heard of any good jeans for this problem? Right now I just buy bootcut jeans or stick with my good old trouser jeans from Gap, but there is such potential for skinny jeans that I really want a pair. I know this is a challenge for lots of women, and hopefully someone out there knows of something that works!

Thanks, you’re fabulous!

Sensibly Styled readers… do you have any suggestions for this lovely lady?

I would suggest she find a pair of denim leggings. They look like denim, but fit like leggings. Check these out: http://www.piperlime.com/products/denim-leggings.jsp

Taking in the waist is a quick fix for someone who knows what they’re doing, so my suggestion is to buy a pair of jeans that fit you in the leg {even if the waist is ridiculously large}, then take them to a tailor. It’s usually inexpensive, too — I normally pay under $10. Good luck!

American Rag brand at Macy’s in the junior’s section ARE AMAZING they have amazing stretch and the look and feel of denim- they are my jegging staple.

whenever a pair of jeans doesn’t fit me here or there, i take them to get altered. i have even had the hips taken in. I’m wondering if she found a pair she liked and fit mostly that a good alteration shop could take them in. i have also heard of people turning jeans into skinny jeans with alterations.

good luck, i too love my skinny jeans. i really do think they make you look skinny!!!

Yes! I know what you’re going through!! To work around it, I buy straight legs (believe they’re called barely boot at Express). They look a lot like skinnies but you give you more space, especially in the calves and thighs :)

  6. Whitney says:

Buy the bigger pair and get them altered.

I second all the suggestions to get them altered, taken in at the waist. That’s the easiest solution, and pretty inexpensive!

I would also say to get a pair that you love and then have them altered in the areas needed. It’s amazing what a few alterations can do!!!

    One word: tailor.

  11. I say buy a pair and alter them yourself! This tutorial from freshly picked is perfect. I have altered 4 pairs of pants this way – http://freshlypicked.blogspot.com/2010/02/taking-in-jeans-at-side-seam-tutorial.html.

    Good luck!

  12. That is a very common problem for those of us with a tapered hip structure. We carry our weight in our thighs. Try Misses sizes instead of Juniors. They usually have more room in the thighs and fit better in the hips and waist. You will probably find that you can wear a smaller size in Misses than in Juniors. That’s always a confidence booster! You may still need to have the waist altered. Try several different brands before you buy. The stretch jeans are more forgiving. Also, I would suggest you wear them with a longer fingertip length loose tunic top (nothing really form fitting) or long boyfriend blazer. You don’t want your “athletic” thighs to be the focus of the outfit. (Check out my post “Hippie Chic” on my blog http://hipfashionstylist.blogspot.com for an idea of what I mean.) Follow these tips and you can rock your skinny jeans with confidence!

I LOVE matchstick fit jeans. They fit very similar to skinnies but aren’t as skinny. Jcrew has some that are awesome. Downeast has some too that are great, but they do stretch out quite a bit the longer you have them on during the day.

I would also suggest the “jeggings”- they’ll provide more stretch where you need it. I know Tim Gunn recommends low rise jeans with women who are “hippy.”

    Good luck!

I have been searching 2 years for skinny jeans and this week found the perfect pair. The new jean leggings from Gap. They fit like a glove! Give them a try!

You might try Joe’s Jeans…I think the cut is called “bestfriend”. They are meant to be worn baggy but I bought a size down and wear them tight. They have a bigger calf opening. Super cute jeans.

I have large calves too (I have to buy boots with the wide shaft) and have a hard time with certain pants. My favorite skinny jeans are Joes Chelsea style (http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/3085617?Category=&Search=True&SearchType=predictivesearch&keyword=joe's+jeans&origin=searchresults). They are stretchy so they help in the tighter areas. I bought one pair on ebay (70 brand new) and one at Nordstrom Rack for the same price. Totally worth it at the regular price though. I really love them. They are super comfortable.

I would like to wear skinny jeans too but they just don’t suit my body shape. Some times it’s hard accept that the latest fashion just doesn’t compliment every body shape. I think skinnys are best suited to waif types which many of us aren’t.
I’m sure though that you could fine 100 other styles of jeans to compliment you. Alternatively I think there are a few sights that let you customise your measurements.

I hate skinny jeans. they make your legs look weird even on skinny girls and they make you look shorter if you are a short person. UGLY!!!!

So this is over a month late, however, the Limited has three styles of denim, one of which being the 917. Currently there’s a black and a blue skinny jean in this style that has super curvy hips and thighs and a smaller waist. I think these would work perfectly for this reader!
