We live on an island called Saipan so it’s always island weather here! Though I do get jealous of everyone’s Christmas cards in snugly sweaters we love that its still warm enough to go to the beach. We took our pictures at Tank Beach where a historic battle took place during WWII. It’s beautiful and green and full of little crabs which made taking pictures there with the kids a blast!

For my family’s pictures this year I used a quilt my husband’s mom made for him back in his bachelor days. It’s so colorful, fun and eccentric. It also matches perfectly with the flowering brush in the fall that can be found in our area. Because the scenery and the blanket were going to be so colorful I knew that our outfit choices needed to be toned down.

The boys were easy. I LOVE the gingham checkered shirts and was able to find both at crazy 8, a navy one and a brown one. The hubs was pretty easy too. He likes practicality. He’s not going to wear let alone buy something that he is never going to wear again. So he got a navy blue tee from Rue 21. Then came the issue of my own outfit. I love colored skinnies but because I’m a momma of 2 who has a little pooch around her middle I felt like I needed to pair the skinnies with a shirt that was flattering yet flowy. I already had some navy skinny jeans from Kohls so I just needed to find the right top. Our town of Cedar City does not many options for clothes.

I wore my skinnys on shopping day to make sure that whatever top I got would go with my jeans. Success came from Rue 21 again. I found a light tan flowy top that tied me into my fam but we weren’t totally matchy matchy. I decided to add a white downeast perfect tee under the tan top since it was sheer and I wanted to keep everyone in the picture looking decent.
I was the photographer and set my camera up on a tripod and used a wireless remote. But that is a whole other adventure.

Hey blog friends!

I love your blog for inspiration but when it comes down to it I’m always lacking in style for myself. But I’m proud of how these pictures came together so I thought I’d share just in case you wanted another example!

This was REALLY last minute – we had about 10 minutes to throw on clothes and run down to take pictures while the weather was nice. My husband wears neutrals well, so I decided to keep it simple and have one accent color for myself and then let the kids look as kid-y and bright as they always do.

We’re not the most put-together people in regular life so I didn’t want the pictures to reflect an alternate reality! I’m also 26 weeks pregnant here – so I wanted something that didn’t make me took too huge – the top camouflaged it rather well If you look carefully, you can see my husband holding the remote for the camera in his hand – we took these ourselves!

The smaller photo is my husband, son and me at my son’s 2 year photos. I wanted to focus the color scheme around my son’s plaid shorts.

The larger family photo is my parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, and my family. My mom wanted everyone to wear red, black and white but I love how we mixed the patterns and styles to give each person a unique look.

I have photos from 2 family sessions taken last year. 

The smaller grouping in reds & blues is my own family. I wanted to work in layers since it was fall and because I love how layering looks in photographs. (photos by Sunshine & Shade Photography: http://sunshineandshadephotography.blogspot.com/ )
