coats of many colors
Here’s an email from our reader, Danielle:
With the recent change in weather, I’ve been thinking a lot about winter coats and I need your help!
What are colors and styles you recommend as the basics that everyone should have that will work for all occasions (work, church, date nights, casual weekends, etc.)? I’m wanting to venture out and get a colored wool coat but I worry that it won’t work with many outfits and since my bank account isn’t bottomless, I really can’t afford to buy a different coat for every occasion.
Thanks so much for your help!
Danielle
Hi Danielle! I love fall-time, and one of the biggest reasons is because I can wear cute coats again! There’s just nothing like a cute coat.
I love the idea of a new coat in a fun color, especially if you already have a coat in a neutral color for the times when a bright color would be too much or inappropriate. My opinion is that if you choose a bright color, don’t worry about it matching everything. Just buy one that you love, and wear it all the time. Make it your new thing. People will be like, “who’s that girl with the awesome coat?” And everyone will be like, “oh, that’s Danielle. Seriously, that’s a cute coat.”
When you’re getting dressed and you’ve got a print dress or blouse on, and you’re not sure if the coat matches…just remind yourself of Whitney from “The City.” Say to yourself, “would Whitney mix a colorful coat with a print?” Yes, she would. And she’d look slammin’. I think we all tend to get hung up on everything matching and coordinating, but our clothes don’t have to. Especially a fun coat. It’s like an outfit bonus. Just wear your normal outfit and then, “wha-BAM”…check out that awesome coat!
So, on to the coats. All of these are from Delia’s, and…they are all under $100. Yes, that’s correct. Every single one is under a hundred bucks. And most of them can be ordered with a thinsulate lining for those in colder climates. And, if color is just not your thing, many of them are also available in other colors (like your basic blacks, grays, and navys).
Some of the colors seem awfully bright, but in the pictures of the models wearing the coats, the colors don’t seem quite so intense. That’s good.
Color – good. Neon – bad.
Have fun picking the one you like best.
Love, Emily
