So I just got two new accessories in the mail today at lunch that I’m dying to tell you about!!

The first is a headwrap from Anthropologie:

The second I think is out of stock (I may have grabbed the last one!) but it is an gold ear cuff with chains that wrap around:

A good substitute would be this

Reader Question: Coats Over Dresses

Posted in Anthropologie, Dresses on September 28th, 2010 by Livi – 4 Comments

Our reader Tessa said,

It is becoming fall and I have been thinking of fun coats to wear over sunday dresses. Do you have any suggestions for long jackets with a cinch or what do you think is the best look for over dresses???

This is perfect timing because Anthropologie has some beautiful, feminine coats that would be PERFECT over dresses.

These are some of my favorites.

Update: Reader Mindy said:

I have really skinny legs.  Really. Skinny.  Bird legs, if you will, that measure no more than 13.5 inches at the thickest part of my calf. I am dying for a pair of knee high (or just below) boots that will actually fit me and not look like I’m wearing galoshes.  Please help!  Oh, and I can’t pay $1,234 dollars for them either.  $300 max (and that’s actually a really high amount for me…I’m just that desperate)

Well Mindy – I did some hunting for you.  Zappos.com is a good place to look because their selection is so huge, they usually have good deals and their customer service is great.    The triple narrow size (AAA) was only available for booties, not knee-highs, but there were a couple of narrow knee high options.

Try: the La Canadienne brand or this cole haan boot

What do you say readers?  Do you have any suggestions for a narrow knee – high boot?

Lets face it, I’ve gone crazy about boots.

I just got this pair at target and I’m over the moon.  Frye’s and Anthropologie’s boots can be pretty expensive, so I found some substitutes online that are just as good or even cuter!

There are a couple Frye pairs at Urban Outfitters right now but there are some other great boots on the web as well.  Hope you enjoy the selection.  Boots are so Fall 2010.

I wish… that I could afford to buy a new swimsuit for every day I am in Hawaii…

Even if I could afford it… I’m too frugal and don’t think I would ever allow myself to do it… but it is fun to dream.

Red swimsuit, Polka dot swimsuit, Red swimsuit, Black swimsuit, Purple swimsuit (my sister in law has this one and it was SO cute on her!), Gray swimsuit

Oh yeah, and I googled “old fashioned swimwear” and got the image below… I feel slightly embarrassed for this guy :) But if you like it, you can purchase it here.

Seriously, who doesn’t love a good floral print hanging in their closet? One thing that I love about florals is how feminine they are. I also love that each pattern is so different, yet give off the same feminine feel. (minus the dress on the bottom left… that is definitely a different look than the others)

Color Wednesday: Turquoise

Posted in Ann Taylor Loft, Anthropologie, Banana Republic, Downeast Basics, Emily's Favorites, Forever 21, Gap, Lane Bryant, Old Navy, Uncategorized on May 19th, 2010 by Emily – 4 Comments

I think that turquoise is one of those great colors that is so likable that it’s hard to overdose on turquoise. Is there anyone out there who doesn’t like turquoise?  What’s not to like?  It’s cheerful and bright, it’s just perfect for summer, and I bet it’s a color that flatters just about everyone.

I’m a little obsessed with the belt and necklaces here, as well as that floral tee.  I don’t know how those gathered sleeves would look on me, but I think I’m going to give it a shot.  It reminds me (in a good way) of a top I would have worn in the fourth grade.  Sometimes this 80′s trend happening right now can get a little ugly, like a redo of the worst the 80′s had to offer.  But I can appreciate some of the good that the 80′s brought us, namely a bright floral print.  Remember bodysuits?  I can distinctly remember wearing floral bodysuits with ruffled skirts in elementary school.

How about you?  Are you on board with the 80′s?  And am I guessing correctly, is turquoise a universally loved color?

What to wear: Great outfits to wear for a picnic!

Posted in Anthropologie, b&lu, Etsy shop, Faith 21, Forever 21, Gap, Jcrew, Jeans, Layering Pieces, Old Navy, Outfit, Plus Size, Target, Tops on May 18th, 2010 by Natalie – 6 Comments

Alright ladies! Today we had Livi guest post what she thought would be a great outfit to wear to a picnic! Check out Livi’s blog for some more awesomeness!

Top (Plus size), Pants (Plus size), Vest (Plus size), Shoes, Necklace, Headband, Scarf, Ring, Earrings, Bracelet, Nail Polish, Lipstick, Sunscreen!

This outfit would be perfect for a picnic in a city park or a country meadow.  I prefer jeans to skirts and thats easier to picnic in anyway!
The vest is perfect to cover up and slim.  I’m all about the layering, its so convenient to pull something out of your purse when it gets cold or put something back in.
The key to this outfit is the accessories: they can be a symphony of organization if done right.  Go Big or Go Home I say. If its a little much for you, pick and choose.
Don’t be scared by the two finger ring either, they’re all the rage right now.  My good friend just sent me this ring and I keep it on a chain.  It can be worn either way.
My friends will all be surprised that I chose such small earrings but with so much going on, they would be the perfect thing.  And of course, above all, a scarf.
If I had to pick one accessory to take with me for the rest of my life it would be a scarf.  Its possibilities are endless and it can be removed if needed.  The model on target.com is totally wearing it wrong, (I would wrap it in a v shape bandanna style around my neck.)  The red of this scarf would look perfect against the dark denim and stripes.
Don’t forget your lipstick:   Sephora Brand Lip Attitude.  I live by it.
And since you’re not wearing a hat, don’t forget the sunscreen!!!  I like Bare Escentuals sun screen powder that can go right over face makeup.

Have fun! -Livi

Hey ladies! I don’t know about you, but I am super excited to have some fun picnics this summer! I am a plain jane when it comes to clothes, I’ve decided. But here’s my outfit! Enjoy! -Natalie

I love picnics, and my little ones are getting to the perfect age for picnics. One of the reasons why I love picnics is that I love picnic quilts! I love quilts of all types and although I don’t think I’m super-skilled enough or prolific enough to call myself a “quilter”, I’m someone who quilts and marvels at handmade treasures. Did you know that on ebay there are hundreds of finished quilt tops just waiting to be purchased and made into a perfect summer picnic quilt? I’m talking handsewn here people! Check it out, search any combination of the words: quilt top, vintage, antique, handsewn, etc. and find yourself a treasure.

Color Wednesday: Bright White

Posted in Anthropologie, Banana Republic, Emily's Favorites, Gap, Lane Bryant, Old Navy, Plus Size, Shabby Apple, Shade, Torrid on May 12th, 2010 by Emily – 3 Comments

As the weather gets warmer, nothing seems more breezy than bright white. I love white in the summertime, and it’s a great neutral to pair with gold, floral prints, nautical stripes…anything, really! I love the Shabby Apple dress in the top right and think it would make such a great bridesmaid dress. I’ve seen (although not very often) weddings where the bride has her bridesmaids in white, too, and I think it’s just beautiful. Imagine a summer wedding with the bride in a beautiful white dress and her bridesmaids in sweet white dresses…it would be so lovely. Quick! Is anyone getting married soon? Take this idea and run with it! Oh, and don’t forget Emersonmade flowers, the men could all have a small white bloom on their black tuxedos. Now that would look great. Seriously, I need to plan weddings for a living. I could dream this stuff up all day.

Color Wednesday: Spring Greens

Posted in Ann Taylor Loft, Anthropologie, Banana Republic, Boden, Downeast Basics, Dresses, Emily's Favorites, Mod Cloth, Old Navy, Shabby Apple, Shade, Uncategorized on May 5th, 2010 by Emily – 3 Comments

I’ve had my eye on that cute short-sleeve jacket from Shade Clothing (bottom left) for a little while now, so a light spring green color came to mind this week. I’m definitely feeling the freshness of green lately. Oh, by the way, you know that these Color Wednesday boards are just a big round-up of lovely things all in the same color, right? I was thinking about it this morning and wouldn’t want someone to think I’m implying that green chino trousers would look great with a striped green cardigan, green earrings, and green espadrille wedges. Yikes, that’s a lot of green! These are just fun options to consider adding to your wardrobe to liven it up with some color, but color when it’s all matchy-matchy looks kind of silly, no? What do you think?

I realized that lately I have been posting a lot of ridiculously expensive items in my Tuesday posts. So, today is different. There isn’t one item in this outfit that is more than $44! Yay for affordable clothing. I really wanted a scarf with this outfit, however this one looks a little off. Maybe a different shade of purple would do it? I also think Yellow would be cute. Anyways, enjoy!

-Natalie

Purple Scarf, Striped t-shirt, Toms Shoes, Denim Leggings, White Bag.

I wanted to pick an outfit that would be comfortable and easy to take on and off while you’re trying things on. I also wanted something cute so that you could feel put together enough to stop by the Cheesecake Factory or something for dinner. I recently had the Santa Fe salad and the Key Lime cheesecake and I wholeheartedly recommend both. Hope you have a girls’ shopping day in your near future!

I love coral, although I usually refer to it as “salmon pink” because my husband has a rad thrift store shirt that is very clearly pink but he calls it salmon. Anyway, this is a great spring color. I love it paired with gray, tiffany blue, or with red in a monochromatic look.  I’m a little obsessed with that wrap cardigan at the bottom, and I’m A LOT obsessed with Emersonmade‘s crazy awesome flowers.  Maybe the perfect Mother’s Day gift?  What’s your favorite?

Color Wednesday: Golden Yellow

Posted in Ann Taylor Loft, Anthropologie, Boden, Downeast Basics, Shabby Apple on April 14th, 2010 by Emily – 1 Comment

Natalie and I both fell in love with the yellow striped pencil skirt from Downeast Basics (see photo, bottom right), and so it was easy to decide on the featured color for today. It just had to be that bright, golden yellow. Yellow is a fun color. I think it would be hard to be in a bad mood while wearing such a cheery color. So, give it a try. If a full out yellow dress or cardigan seems a little too loud for your taste, try a fun bag or cute yellow flats for a bright punch of color.

p.s. Are you as obsessed with that striped skirt as we are?  You could win it!  Don’t forget to enter the giveaway!

Color Wednesday: Navy

Posted in Ann Taylor Loft, Anthropologie, Banana Republic, Dresses, Jcrew, Old Navy, Uncategorized on April 7th, 2010 by Emily – 5 Comments

For most of my life I hated the color navy. I thought it was just about the most boring, nondescript color ever. Lately, however, I’ve been warming up to the idea and find myself drawn to navy clothes quite often. It’s a perfect neutral, and pairs itself so well with tons of great colors.
Want to add more color to your wardrobe? Use navy as a neutral base and then add pops of color. Ballerina pink and bubble gum pink look great with navy, as do lime, a soft tangerine or salmon color, and golden yellow.  For example, look at the pretty tank with the floral collar.  The coral rose just pops right out at you and then later you notice the navy top.  I like that.

Navy is also a great color to use when you’re sick of wearing black, but want the chicness of black.  That navy pump is a perfect replacement for all the times when you’d probably wear your good ol’ black pumps, but want something just a little more interesting.

A new, cute, and modest dress from Anthropologie! YAY! And for Anthropologie, it is pretty affordable…

Let me clarify, no… this is not affordable to me… it is affordable for being an Anthropologie dress…

Shabby Apple ‘Sheep Meadow Dress’

So the dress on the left is absolutely perfect… I need it. And when I say need it… this time, I mean it! It is a modest version of the Anthropologie dress on the right that was out last summer. (pictured in this post, second outfit down) And I wanted that dress, but not only was it $178.00, it was also sleeveless, so I would have had to buy a cardigan as well. So yes, this dress is $88.00… but that’s like over $100.00 savings compared to the Anthropologie dress. (haha my husband laughs when I consider buying this dress and tell him that I’m really saving money…)
