What the…? My friend Almira of Healthy Republic just forwarded me an email she got from Shade. (image above) Does anyone know? Does this mean they are going out of business? Sad day.

UPDATE: Thanks readers for getting me up to date! Here is the link to the formal letter.

Pretty much it says that they are closing, and don’t know when they will be back, but plan on making a comeback at some point…

I agree, that the shoes are the wrong color. Okay?  Today I was at the Library with Jane and this lady who was probably about 65 or 70 walks in with so much style! I wish I had my camera. She even had the cutest haircut I’ve ever seen on a lady her age. (no offense) So, this is me trying to re create the look of the super stylish lady. (And yes, she was wearing over sized sunglasses. I want to be her when I’m older…)

Wouldn’t this skirt look great with this scarf? I love it.

Shade Clothing: Style Guide

Posted in Editorial, Emily's Favorites, Shade, Uncategorized on May 20th, 2010 by Emily – 2 Comments

Okay, so here’s the thing, I love Shade Clothing. I’m pretty much a devotee. But the first 100 times I looked at their website I just didn’t get it.  I don’t know where the disconnect in my brain was, but I just saw lots of sort of plain-ish clothes that I had no idea what to do with.

Then, I saw it.  Their Style Guide.  Shade does an AMAZING job of putting their clothes with the kinds of items that we all have in our closet anyway to create really wearable looks.  I love seeing the looks that they put together with clothes of theirs + clothes from other places, because isn’t that how we all dress?

Shade has really livable, wearable clothes.  Of course I love a J.Crew kind of look and an Anthropologie kind of look, but, I love the Shade look, too, and this is a perfect match for my lifestyle of picking up toys, playdates, wiping noses, etc.

Plus, the best part, is when you have a simple canvas of really wearable clothes that are easy to mix and match, then when you buy a special top or necklace from Anthropologie, it really takes the outfit up to a new level.  An easy upgrade.

Take this girl in the middle here:  I never would think to pair that sweater and that blazer together, but I think the outfit looks great.  I think we all have some dark wash skinny jeans in our closet, so we’re halfway there to that cute outfit.  Then, if you wanted to add a blouse instead of the sweater…upgrade!

two things I should mention:
1. Shade did not pay for, sponsor, or solicit this post. I’m seriously just a mega-fan of Shade and wanted to share.
2. The Style Guide is kind of hard to find on the website (why, Shade? Put it front and center!) but click the link, or from their blog you can go the the Style Guide category on the right and view all of the posts showing past Style Guides. I definitely recommend it.

Color Wednesday: Bright White

Posted in Anthropologie, Banana Republic, Emily's Favorites, Gap, Lane Bryant, Old Navy, Plus Size, Shabby Apple, Shade, Torrid on May 12th, 2010 by Emily – 3 Comments

As the weather gets warmer, nothing seems more breezy than bright white. I love white in the summertime, and it’s a great neutral to pair with gold, floral prints, nautical stripes…anything, really! I love the Shabby Apple dress in the top right and think it would make such a great bridesmaid dress. I’ve seen (although not very often) weddings where the bride has her bridesmaids in white, too, and I think it’s just beautiful. Imagine a summer wedding with the bride in a beautiful white dress and her bridesmaids in sweet white dresses…it would be so lovely. Quick! Is anyone getting married soon? Take this idea and run with it! Oh, and don’t forget Emersonmade flowers, the men could all have a small white bloom on their black tuxedos. Now that would look great. Seriously, I need to plan weddings for a living. I could dream this stuff up all day.

Color Wednesday: Spring Greens

I’ve had my eye on that cute short-sleeve jacket from Shade Clothing (bottom left) for a little while now, so a light spring green color came to mind this week. I’m definitely feeling the freshness of green lately. Oh, by the way, you know that these Color Wednesday boards are just a big round-up of lovely things all in the same color, right? I was thinking about it this morning and wouldn’t want someone to think I’m implying that green chino trousers would look great with a striped green cardigan, green earrings, and green espadrille wedges. Yikes, that’s a lot of green! These are just fun options to consider adding to your wardrobe to liven it up with some color, but color when it’s all matchy-matchy looks kind of silly, no? What do you think?

Shade Swimsuit Giveaway!

Posted in Shade, Swimwear on April 26th, 2010 by Ashley – 235 Comments

Hey Everyone! We are hosting ANOTHER swimsuit giveaway- this time from Shade!!!

I was lucky to have the opportunity to review one of their suits. This was the first shade suit I have tried and I really like it. I chose the ‘Riviera Swim Top‘ in violet and ‘Slimmer Swim Bottom.’ I chose these because I just love the ruffle along the neckline and I wanted to own a purple swimsuit. I was so happy when I received it. It has a very flattering fit- and the size was very accurate to what I ordered. On top of that, just like I thought, the ruffle is ADORABLE! I love it!

One lucky reader will win a Shade Swimsuit of their choice!

Just leave a comment telling us what your favorite Shade Swimsuit is on this post no later then Wednesday April 28th at Midnight.

Goodluck!!!

Pretty and pink.

While Scarlett Johansson’s dress isn’t so much modest in my book, I think the print is just gorgeous. I remembered seeing pictures of this Oscar de la Renta gown she wore to the “He’s Just Not That Into You” premiere way back when, but then when I saw this Talbot’s skirt recently my tired brain grapes were trying to figure out why I loved the print already and where I saw it before. I kept thinking it had to do with Scarlett Johansson, so I googled “Scarlett Johansson pink dress” and pictures of this came right up. Maybe 1/3 of her fashion choices are modest, but I always seem to like her style. Anyways, here’s our chance at what looks to be a copycat print of her gown. Works out better anyhow, since I don’t really have a red carpet event coming up to wear a gown to, but I could always use a pretty and springy floral skirt.

I like how Talbot’s styled the skirt with a nude colored shoe. The print is awfully busy and colorful, and I think it looks beautiful with the nude pump. I have the skirt styled with a pretty silk blouse (I’d wear a slim tee underneath of the same cream color) and a gold belt with a pretty orange beaded necklace. This would be a great look for a spring wedding or formal event.

A must-have dress.

Posted in Dresses, Outfit, Shade on March 1st, 2010 by Emily – 8 Comments

This morning, while reading one of my favorite blogs, Stephmodo, I saw a link to a new collection by Narciso Rodriguez.  I’m not a designer clothes-wearing kind of girl, but I have always liked Rodriguez’s clothes.  (First Lady Michelle Obama wears Narciso Rodriguez all the time, and looks fantastic.)  Of course, a cute and simple knit black dress caught my attention, and then I realized, I pretty much already have this dress.  Check out the comparison:

Cute dress and cute shoes, but this look will set you back $720.00. Yes, that’s right, seven hundred twenty DOLLARS. Crazy.

For that kind of money, you could buy:
an almost identical dress (from Shade Clothing, one of my all-time favorites), cute shoes and accessories for three separate looks, and still have $300 left over.  I have this dress and believe it to be the perfect casual-on-the-verge-of-nice (business casual?) little black dress.  The scoopneck is just the right amount of scoop, flattering without giving away the farm.  It looks more sleek than it feels…it feels like you’re wearing a dress made out of your favorite sweatshirt.  I seriously love this dress, and wore an outfit similar to outfit #1 just the other day.

Trust me on this one, you’ll love this dress.  And it’s on sale.  What more could you want?

1. necklace, tights, shoes

2. necklace, bangles, shoes

3. necklace, ring, shoes

Shade Skirt Giveaway! WAHOO!

Posted in Shade on October 12th, 2009 by Natalie – 168 Comments

Picture 65Alrighty, we have a great giveaway for you today! Shade Clothing is giving up one super cute Denim Skirt!

Jana did a review for us and here it is:

I absolutely love this denim skirt. It is so extremely versatile. I found I could easily dress it up or down depending on the top and shoes I wore with it. The darker denim wash also made it versatile in the types of tops and colors I could wear with it.
I also loved how flattering this skirt was to my figure. It is very slimming and fits like a pencil skirt, holding in my extra curves and making me feel thin and beautiful.
The length of this skirt is perfect. It hits me just below the kneecap even when I’m sitting down which also means it stayed in place and didn’t creep up like some pencil skirts do.  Even after wearing it all day, it stayed in place and was very comfortable.
The last thing I loved about this skirt were the hidden snap buttons on back. Instead of a slit in back, there are three buttons holding the slit closed that allow you to adjust the slit of the skirt to work for you. This made it very easy to walk in while still giving me a straight silhouette. I would absolutely recommend this skirt to every body type and anyone who is looking for a versatile, slimming denim skirt. And for the price, how can you beat it?!
So, if you would like to win this skirt… go on over to Shade Clothing, check it out… and then leave us a comment before Tuesday the 13th at Midnight!

Also, Shade is giving 5 deserving women wardrobes! If you know of someone  you would like to nominate to win… please email Ali at ali@shadeclothing.com

Layering issues, from our reader, Brittney C.

Posted in Charlotte Russe, Downeast Basics, Layering Pieces, Outfit, Shade, Tops on July 30th, 2009 by Natalie – 4 Comments

Hi ladies! I LOVE your site…so many great ideas, and awesome advice for those of us trying to look good.

One issue I almost always have is that layers tend to slide off around my boobs, exposing my bra strap, etc. That’s obviously not the look I’m going for!  If I get my layers in a larger size, I lose any shape I had. Do I need to just stick with tshirts underneath, (and if so, can you suggest some?) or do you know some magic solution with safety pins that can save me?

Thanks for any help. Keep up the amazing site!

Brittney (Below… pictures sent in by Brittney. Below that… our solution)

Brittney! I’m so glad you wrote us this email. I totally have the same problem. An easy fix to the problem is buying “sleeveless” tops instead of “tank” tops. The three tops that I am showing here are all slightly different, but all of them will keep your bra straps covered! The only way anyone will see anything is if your top layer totally falls off one of your shoulders. So… ditch the tank tops… and get some sleeveless blouses to wear for your layering outfits! I hope this helps! Also, if you are looking for simple tees to wear underneath, I would check out DownEast’s Wonder Tee, and Shade’s Classic Cap Sleeve.

Peace. Natalie
